Frequently asked questions
As a first step, please read through the programme pages on our website to determine your eligibility for different programmes, and which might be a good fit for you.
If you’re still unsure after reading these, please contact our Admissions Office. They will help you get the information you need to select the right programme. If necessary, they will schedule a conversation to understand your situation better.
All ecclesiastical degree programme students at Regis College must be registered concurrently in a civil degree programme. To apply for an ecclesiastical degree programme, you should apply for an analogous civil degree programme:
- If you want to apply to the Bachelor of Sacred Theology (STB), you should apply to the Master of Divinity (MDiv) and complete the optional Bachelor of Sacred Theology section in that application. The STB application is incorporated in the MDiv application.
- If you want to apply to the Licentiate in Sacred Theology (STL), you should first apply to the Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MA) or the Master of Theology (ThM) through the Toronto School of Theology (TST). Once you have been offered a place in the MA or the ThM, you can apply to the STL using this portal. The STL application will require you to upload your MA or ThM offer of admission letter.
- If you want to apply to the Doctor of Sacred Theology (STD), you should first apply to the Doctor of Philosophy in Theological Studies (PhD) through the TST. Once you have been offered a place in the PhD, you can apply to the STD using this portal. The STD application will require you to upload your PhD offer of admission letter.
You can find further information about our ecclesiastial degrees here.
“First-cycle,” “second-cycle,” and “third-cycle” studies correspond to the Bachelor of Sacred Theology, Licentiate in Sacred Theology, and Doctor of Sacred Theology, respectively. You should apply for one of these programmes. Please see the question about ecclesiastical degree programmes, above.
You aren’t alone! Regis College and the Toronto School of Theology have a unique degree system and nomenclature. In a nutshell:
- Our basic degree programmes mostly do not require a prior degree in theology, although they do require a university background. For this reason, they’re sometimes called “second-entry undergraduate” programmes. Our MDiv, MTS, MTS–TSA, and MAMS are all basic degrees; our CTS and CTIE are also “at the basic degree level,” although of course they’re certificates, and not full degrees.
- Our graduate degree programmes mostly do require a prior degree in theology. They’re administered (including application and admission) by the TST. Our MA, ThM, and PhD are all graduate degree programmes.
- Our ecclesiastical degree programmes are credentials recognized and governed by the Catholic Church. Regis only admits students into its ecclesiastical degrees who are registered concurrently in civil degrees. Normally, ecclesiastical degree studies must be undertaken concurrently with civil degree studies according to the following correspondences:
- STB: MDiv
- STL: ThM or, sometimes, MA
- STD: PhD
Yes, we do! To apply for Regis College scholarships or financial assistance, please complete the optional “Scholarships and financial assistance” section of your programme application. Information you enter in this section of your programme application will not be taken into account in assessing your programme application.
Scholarships and financial assistance decisions are normally released in multiple rounds in the spring and summer, and are independent of admission decisions.
Regis College cannot guarantee funding for its students; it is our students’ responsibility to secure sufficient funding for their studies (tuition + living expenses). We encourage you to research and apply to many sources of funding early, even before submitting your application.
The “Application(s) status” page in your portal profile will be updated once a decision has been made; you will receive an email when this status update is available. Applicants will receive a direct email with a notice of their decision. Decisions are normally available within a month of application submission.
Toronto School of Theology
If you want to apply to a graduate-level research degree in theology—e.g., the Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MA), the Master of Theology (ThM), the Doctor of Ministry (DMin), or the Doctor of Philosophy in Theological Studies (PhD)—you must do so through the Toronto School of Theology (TST).
These programmes ordinarily require a prior degree in theology.
